About

Katharine Gray Ceramics is a studio based in rural Kent, England, on the edge of the Pilgrim’s Way.

Founded by Katharine in 2023, the artist originally earned a Fine Art Degree at university in upstate New York, with a focus on Ceramics and Textiles. Following university, she pursued a successful career in Interior Design for 20 years, before rediscovering her love for creating beautiful ceramics.

Katharine specialises in all forms of decorative and functional ware, from full dinner services to unique ornamental bowls and elegant vases.

With a signature style that is natural and fresh. Katharine’s work is inspired by the grey clay of the Connecticut River Valley where she was born and raised, the white rock of England’s southern coast where she now makes her home, and the ocean in-between.

From the artist

‘My approach to clay is clear, keep it simple. I like the juxtaposition between the expressiveness of the clay form and the fine detail required in the decorating and glazing process. I still use many of the same techniques I used at university, but love experimenting with new concepts and ideas. I’m settling into the style of my work, but am still exploring unique forms and glaze colours.

At university my pieces were more sculptural and decorative, but I’m now drawn to making functional ware that people can enjoy using every day.

My collection is all in stoneware, thrown on the potters wheel or hand-built. It is then bisque fired to Cone 4 (approx. 1000C) and then glaze fired to Cone 6 (approx. 1220C).

I’m currently working on a number of commissions and collaborations ranging from small batch to large orders. I’m also working with a number of stockists and showing at fairs.

In addition to making my own work, I teach ceramic workshops at Westwell Wines and in London and the South East. I’m also qualified to work with children and have taught at schools in and around Kent.
